Rape in Thailand
The year 2014 I'll remember forever as the year the most horrific rape and murders in Thailand that I've heard about, but rape is nothing new to Thailand I've documented a number of cases that were just horrible here on the site but so far nothing comes close to the rape and murder of the 13 year old on the overnight train and the rape and murder of Hannah Witheridge. Both cases are really hard to comprehend how anybody could do such a thing.
While these two cases are high profile and gathered news around the world there are still rapes going on all the time in Thailand and probably so much so that unless someone gets murdered as well goes unnoticed by the world and in Thailand get's little attention. Just today I read a story about some bastard raped a 10 year old girl.
I'm not surprised by the comments from one Thai person to that story either. For those of you who can't read Thai it says: Everyday Thailand has a story about rape. This is exactly what I wanted to say. With a quick google search here's what I found in a few minutes:
September 30th (couldn't find anything because of the news of the train rape and murder)
September 29th Gang rape of 3 girls aged 12-15
September 28th 4 year old boy raped
September 27th Guy raped his daughter for a year
September 26th Monk raped a 14 year old girl
Amazingly I kept going for a for another week back and every single day had a case in fact some days had more, I'd also like to point out that the rapes didn't occur on these days it's just been reported. You know Thailand isn't the best at record keeping so no one actually knows the exact numbers but I'd like to point to the obvious here that rarely do you hear of guys or girls over 18 getting raped. Does that mean it doesn't happen? Of course it does! I'd dare to say that it happens more often than kids getting raped but because of loss of face and all that Asian mentality that it doesn't get reported or hushed up with money.
Of all the Thai girls I've been intimate enough with, a huge percentage of them have confessed that they were raped. But if we are talking about my own personal experience with talking to women about rape then the truth is Thailand is not the worst, I met more women who said they were fondled or raped as children in the USA!
The extent and prevalence of rape in Thailand as I've said is impossible to measure but there is a rape culture in Thailand and in most cases it's drugs that are involved. Not just Yah Bah but alcohol as well. An amazing number of cases of children raped in Thailand because their parents were so drunk that they fell asleep and left them with some drunk dude.
So even though according to statistics you're more likely to get raped in the USA and apparently Sweden it happens in Thailand a hell of a lot and those at the biggest risk are children who have drunkards as parents. My ex told me about how she was raped and lost her virginity, a few friends took her to a hotel room to "hang out" where some guy was, her friends shortly left and he raped her then she never reported It as i'm sure 80% of cases aren't.
I personally don't believe that Thailand has a higher percentage of rape than some other countries, I bet Cambodia and India would have higher percentages it all comes down to opportunity. If you have kids, don't leave them by themselves, don't get drunk and pass out while your next door neighbor is able to get to them, if you're a woman again I wouldn't travel alone and certainly I wouldn't travel alone at night, nor get into a taxi at night alone. I wouldn't walk down dark alley ways or get drunk with a bunch of Thai guys and I certainly wouldn't be going to any secluded areas like an unlit part of the beach in the middle of the night.
The news you linked to is in Thai. Your farang audience cannot read it… duh.
I realize that which is why I put the translation on the blog for the titles at least, most English news here is about foreigners so the rape and murder of Thai boys and girls go largely unreported in English.
It really is amazing what evil humans are capable of.
for Thailand in particular though, I think a big part of the problem is the casual acceptance of rape in popular culture, as seen in TV dramas all the time.
I’m amazed also how many times I’ve heard nonchalantly how some person was raped, particularly by a guardian and the whole matter just hushed up with no one really caring about real justice.
Ok Chris, this is getting better. Better than highlighting how to land “poon-tang” at the local uni. You copped a dubbing over that one, so I won’t preach or come down on you with my keyboard. The hushed-up campaigns, bribes to local fuzz seldom makes it into the mainstream media, but there are plenty of local Thai folk that will site examples, in supposedly the more “civilised” or affluent parts of Thailand. I’ve little doubt the “saving face” factor has alot to do with the stats being lower than so-called first world economies.
Yeah, the yanks are no saints, neither are folks in Oz (seems to be an unusually high statistic in Australia?), still, it’s easy to pay authorities off in Thailand, so stats have little bearing comparatively speaking.
Hi Chris,
That any person will sink so low to rape another its sickening I believe rapist all over the world should be shot.Pl;ease do me a favour google how many people get raped in South Africa, babies a few days old get raped as the people believe it will cure them from Aids, Lesbians get gang raped as they believe it will change her outlook. The sick mentality of some humans here is frightening

After reading this sentence, TBH, im not sure who you have been talking with and what kind of society you are in
im tired of foreigners who come to this country just for red light district and assume that it s all about Thailand
I agree with you that people who have only visited the nightlife districts and met people from those walks of life are not informed enough to make a bold generalization. That’s why the author here who has Thai Family and friends, went to school here, started thai oriented businesses and educated in Thai wrote this post.
