How to ship your Bike through the Thai Post Office

I've decided to spend a few months in Pattaya actually it might be more like 6 months i'm still not sure, after last year in Pattaya I realized I didn't have any real goals except to break up with my girlfriend so I didn't get what I really wanted to get done, this year is different story though I have a real plan, more on that later.

You can rent a bike in Pattaya for as little as 2,000 baht a month but since I plan to stay here for at least 3 months that would be 6,000 baht, you can ship your bike from Chiang Mai to Pattaya or really from anywhere to anywhere for less than much less than the cost of renting.

What to know before shipping your bike in Thailand

If you just have a small scooter than you can take your bike to most post offices for shipping, some don't have the facilities though and especially for big bikes you'll want to take it to the regional post office. The other post offices typically ship the bike to the regional post office anyway so it's better to take it there.

Empty the gas Tank!

Do not have a full gas tank! The gas will be drained before it's shipped! This is done for safety reasons and even if the post office doesn't do it you should. The annoying thing about this is when you recieve your bike it'll be empty so make sure you take some gas with you. Since I shipped my bike to Pattaya this was easy but when I ship it back it won't be because they don't sell gas in bottles.

Make sure you prepare your bike!

Don't expect the Thai Post and Logispost to Take extreme care with your bike, you might just have old bomb that you don't care but you might have a brand new ER-6n that could cost you thousands if it got scratched so make sure it's packaged correctly. The bike still needs to roll and the stand to go down but other than that the bike should be completely wrapped but with tight packaging so your bike get's to it's destination without a mark.

Prepare your bike before the Post office

  • If you don't have a spanner go to the closest ปะยาง (mechanic) but best to buy one and ship it along with you're bike so you can put it back together.
  • Take off the mirrors
  • Remove any lights that may be protruding from the bike.

Prepare your bike again at the Post office

  • The Post office sells you a box for motorcycle shipping starting at 210 baht. For something less than 120cc this should be sufficient, bigger bikes you'll want more box and bubble wrap.
  • Bubble wrap all the Motorcycle Fairings, anything is possible and melted plastic from Thailand's heat landing on your fairing it'll cost you.
  • You can ship helmets as well as tools with the bike they'll give you another bag to put those in, I suggest what you can put under the seat (scooter lights should fit in their) then do it much safer.
  • It's safe to send the key along with the bike but no need to tempt fate if you don't need to.

Alternatives to using the Thai Postal Service

The alternative to using the Thai Post Office is to use Nim See Sang which I used to use but though I'd give the Thai Post a try. Shipping the bike back to Chiang Mai i'll likely use them as it's cheaper.

How much does it cost to ship a bike?

Depending on where you live you'll need to check with your local Post Office for shipping costs. Obviously the further away you are the more it will cost.

To ship my Click from Chiang Mai to Pattaya it cost 2400 baht for the shipping and 110 baht for the box. So in Total it was 2,610 baht not too bad but i'm sure Nim See Sang will be less than 2,000 baht. I did check the price on my Ninja which is 250cc and it would have cost 6,120 baht including packaging.

Picking Up The Bike

It took only 7 days from the day it was shipped in Chiang Mai to the day it arrived in Pattaya. When I paid for the shipping I left my name and contact telephone number. It was OK that I didn't have a shipping address because you can't ship door to door anyway the post office will only ship to another post office they tell you which one when you do the shipping. They called the day it arrived and have me pick it up from the Banglamung Post Office. I was already prepared with a bottle of gas and it was quite simple. I didn't show my passport at all it just my Thai Drivers license was sufficient.

ship bike from chiang mai to pattaya

Only problem now my bike says Chiang Mai

Why don’t you just ride it down to Patts? It’s only around 800 Kms. Ride straight thru in 10 hrs or take time doing it in 2 days. I can understand shipping a scooter. But you have a motorcycle built for trips like this. If you just need a get around town bike rent a scooter. A real man would ride the bike to Patts. lol

lol I thought about it but my other bike is like a walking target in Pattaya this isn’t the place to stick out.

Hmmm, too bad. Your Kawi is a nice bike. Shame that Patts can’t be trusted. Well, enjoy yourself.

Interesting I would not have thought of the post office. I have just simply taken it on the bus, the older ones just roll it in, the newer ones dismantle it a little as you described. Farang price is a little under double of the normal ticket price. Can probably get a lot lower as I was fairly new here when I did it.

Not all bus services allow this, since I wasn’t coming here at the same time as my bike i had to ship it.

I ship bikes from CM to anywhere in Thailand and back again. Prestige Motorbike Transport on the usual F/Book. I cannot compete with post office rated, this is more of a personal service with great detail to safety and taking care of what we carry. Refs available

      Hello,
Any suggestions for shipping a BICYCLE from Surat Thani train station to Krabi?

  6. Neebler June 24, 2017 at 2:17 pm #

Put it on the train, if your close to a route.

  7. Michael February 16, 2018 at 2:56 pm #

The person say ride it hasn’t done the ride. I went from Song Dao to Udon Thani to Khon Kaen.. spent the night. From there to CM, Night riding is scary. Cannot trust toads go fast, cannot trust other drivers, cannot trust pavement…🙄
